1. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files that websites place on your device (computer, tablet, or smartphone) when you visit them. They are stored in your browser and allow the website — or third-party services — to recognize your device on subsequent visits.

Cookies serve many purposes: they can remember your preferences, keep you logged in, help websites work correctly, and allow website owners and advertisers to understand how users interact with a site. Think of them as a website's way of "remembering" you.

Cookies themselves cannot run programs or deliver viruses to your computer. They are plain text files that can only be read by the website that set them (with the exception of third-party cookies, described below).

2. Cookies We Use

StatuteLimits.com uses cookies in the following categories:

2a. Essential Cookies

These cookies are strictly necessary for the basic functionality of the website. Without them, certain features of the site cannot function.

  • Session state: Remembers your calculator inputs within a browsing session so that if you navigate away and return, your selections may be preserved by your browser's URL parameters.
  • Preference cookies: If in the future we add language or accessibility preferences, these cookies would store your settings locally.

Essential cookies do not track you across other websites and do not collect personally identifiable information for marketing purposes.

2b. Analytics Cookies (Google Analytics)

We use Google Analytics to understand how visitors interact with StatuteLimits.com. This helps us improve the site's content, design, and performance. Google Analytics collects information such as:

  • Pages you visit and how long you spend on them
  • How you arrived at the site (search engine, direct link, referring website)
  • Your general geographic location (country or city level — not your precise address)
  • What type of device, browser, and operating system you use
  • Whether you are a new or returning visitor
  • What search terms brought you to the site (when available from search engines)

Google Analytics uses first-party cookies (set by StatuteLimits.com) as well as cookies set by Google on the google-analytics.com domain. The data collected is aggregated and anonymized — we cannot identify individual visitors from this data.

Google's privacy policy governs how Google handles analytics data: policies.google.com/privacy.

2c. Advertising Cookies (Google AdSense)

StatuteLimits.com displays advertisements served by Google AdSense. Google AdSense uses cookies to serve ads that are relevant to your interests, based on your browsing history and other factors. These are known as "interest-based" or "behavioral" advertising cookies.

Specifically, Google AdSense cookies may:

  • Track your visits to this and other websites to build a profile of your interests
  • Use that profile to display advertisements more relevant to you
  • Limit the number of times you see the same advertisement
  • Measure the effectiveness of advertising campaigns
  • Report aggregate statistics to advertisers (without identifying individual users)

Google AdSense uses the DoubleClick cookie and other technologies. Google's advertising principles are available at support.google.com/ads/answer/2662922.

3. Third-Party Cookies

In addition to first-party cookies set by StatuteLimits.com itself, the following third parties may set cookies on your device when you visit our site:

  • Google Analytics — analytics.google.com, google-analytics.com
  • Google AdSense / DoubleClick — doubleclick.net, googlesyndication.com, google.com
  • Google Fonts — fonts.googleapis.com, fonts.gstatic.com (primarily used for performance; limited cookies)

We do not have direct control over third-party cookies. Each third party's use of cookies is governed by their own privacy and cookie policies.

4. How to Control Cookies

You have several options to control cookies:

Browser Settings

Most web browsers allow you to manage cookies through their settings. Here's how to do it in the most common browsers:

  • Google Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
  • Mozilla Firefox: Preferences → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
  • Apple Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
  • Microsoft Edge: Settings → Site permissions → Cookies and site data

In most browsers, you can: block all cookies, block third-party cookies only, delete existing cookies, or set up notifications when cookies are placed.

Google Ad Settings

You can opt out of personalized advertising by Google at any time by visiting Google's ad settings page: adssettings.google.com. You can also opt out through the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page at optout.networkadvertising.org.

Google Analytics Opt-Out

Google provides a browser add-on that prevents your data from being used by Google Analytics. Download it at: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

5. Impact of Disabling Cookies

If you choose to disable or block cookies, some parts of StatuteLimits.com may not function as intended. Specifically:

  • The deadline calculator may not retain your selections if you navigate away and return
  • Some ad serving functionality may not work, meaning you may see less relevant or no advertisements
  • Certain performance improvements may not apply

Disabling cookies will not prevent you from accessing the core statute of limitations reference information on the site, which is fully functional without cookies.

6. Do Not Track

Some browsers have a "Do Not Track" feature that sends a signal to websites indicating that you do not want to be tracked. Currently, there is no uniform standard for responding to DNT signals, and StatuteLimits.com does not currently respond to DNT browser signals. However, you can use the opt-out mechanisms described in Section 4 above to limit tracking.

7. Updates to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or for other operational reasons. When we make changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
